Cyberpunk 2077 Is Officially Entering A Another New Era

Hey Night City fans! The Cyberpunk 2077 sequel (internally known as Project Orion) is officially moving forward, and CD Projekt RED is determined not to repeat the mistakes of the original game’s rocky launch in 2020.

Here’s everything we know about the upcoming sequel and how the studio plans to fix past problems.

The Original Cyberpunk 2077 Launch Disaster

Most gamers still remember the chaotic launch of Cyberpunk 2077 in December 2020. The game was full of bugs, crashes, and performance issues, especially on last-gen consoles (PS4 and Xbox One). It was even temporarily removed from the PlayStation Store.

However, thanks to years of massive updates and the excellent Phantom Liberty DLC, the game has since become one of the most respected RPGs.

Key Changes for Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel

1. Learning from Past Mistakes
Senior Writer Adrian Fulneczek admitted the original launch was “chaos” due to poor documentation, fragmented tools, and developing for too many platforms at once.

2. Unified Development Process
For the sequel, CDPR is introducing:

  • A new strict definition of “done”
  • No split documentation or tools
  • Unified code base across teams

3. Collaboration with Witcher 4 Team
The studio is now sharing code and solutions between the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel team and The Witcher 4 team. If one team solves a technical problem, the other can immediately use it.

4. New Setting
The sequel will not be set in Night City. It is moving to a brand-new location — a futuristic reimagining of Chicago (described by creator Mike Pondsmith as “Chicago gone wrong”).

5. Next-Gen Focused
Unlike the first game, the sequel is being built from the ground up for current-generation hardware only, which should significantly reduce launch problems.

6. Long Development Time
The game is still in early stages. Full production is expected to ramp up in late 2026 or 2027, meaning a realistic release window is likely 2028 or later.

7. High Ambition
CD Projekt RED wants the sequel to be a true next-level experience, learning from both the failures and the redemption arc of the first game.

Final Thoughts

CD Projekt RED has clearly taken the lessons from Cyberpunk 2077’s troubled launch very seriously. With better internal processes, code sharing, and a next-gen-only focus, fans have good reason to be optimistic about the sequel.

However, we will still have to wait several years before returning to the Cyberpunk universe.
